Saturday’s dramatic conclusion to the National League North season saw Saints retain 4th spot and a home tie in the Play-Off Eliminator and Gloucester City catapulted from 10th place into 7th to snatch a Play-Off place from Buxton who dropped to 11th and ahead of both Scarborough and Spennymoor on goal difference. Brackley drew with Alfreton while The Tigers won a seven-goal thriller over Chorley.
Those results bring Gloucester to St James Park on Wednesday evening for a 7.45pm kick-off. The game will be settled on the night with extra time and penalties if needed. The winners travel to Chester on Sunday for the Play-Off Semi-Final.
Wednesday night’s game will be Brackley’s sixth attempt to win promotion to Step One via the Play-Offs while for the visitors it marks a first appearance. Gloucester’s 7th placed finish is the club’s highest ever and comes after a strong second half to the season under manager Steve King.
When the two sides met at The Tiger Turf Stadium in late August Brackley won through a George Carline goal and Saints completed the double in January as goals from Jimmy Armson, Adam Rooney, Cosmas Matwasa and Levi Amantchi secured the points.
Gloucester‘s home form has been table-topping while on the road they won two of the last three so will arrive full of confidence. Gaz Dean’s side put in a fine performance against fellow play-off chasing Alfreton on Saturday.
Both sides know that previous form counts for little in a one-off “winner takes all” Play-Off game. Tickets have been selling fast so we can expect a large crowd with strong support for both sides.
