Wednesday night’s action saw Brackley Town take a combination of u18s and first-team squad players to Steel Park, home of Corby Town FC for their Northants FA Hillier Cup fixture, with the home fans in great voice throughout.
The first half saw Corby take the ascendency from the off, pushing the Brackley back line deeper towards captain for the game Ali Worby in the Saints goal, who performed well throughout, along with a confident performance by midfielder Jeff Putz. Early chances for the Steelmen in the first came largely down both wings, with the Saint's back line remaining firm.
The first goal came during the early stages, seeing Tristan Dunkley of Corby fire a low shot across Worby for the lead. Brackley’s first chance came on 28 minutes, seeing new signing Reece Massey make some contact with a ball delivered from a free kick from the left but was unable to steer his effort home. Brackley remained solid through the remainder of the half, seeing the hosts go in 1-0 up at the break.
The early stages of the second half brought a second goal to the game, from the boot of Corby winger Osarugue Uyi-Olaye after some scrappy play in the Brackley box. The third came on 70 minutes, following a strong reaction save by Worby down to his left – the referee deemed that his attempt to stop the follow-up effort from Uyi-Olaye had crossed the line and a third for the hosts was awarded.
The young Saints team’s determined performance was awarded with a goal from striker Connor Morgan on 84 minutes, bringing the score to 3-1. A late Corby penalty could have seen a 4th, but a strong save by Worby down to his right ensured was the final key moment of the match.
Congratulations to all the young Saints players who made their debuts last night and gave an excellent account of themselves.
All the best to Corby Town for their season ahead.
Thank you to all Saints supporters who made the trip to Corby to get behind the team, the boys really appreciated it.
Thank you to Glenn Alcock for manning Twitter for the evening and writing the match report too.
Brackley now turn their attention back to the Vanarama National League North with two tough away fixtures, Chester on Saturday and Kings Lynn next Tuesday evening.
