After an even start to the first half, as both sides struggled to establish themselves, Gavin Cowan’s side gradually took control. Newton’s effort was saved in the first real chance before Riccardo Calder fired the home side in front on the half-hour after a defensive lapse. George Carline’s long-range shot was close and Alfie Bates headed over when well placed before Buxton finished the half mounting some pressure on Danny Lewis’ goal but unable to capitalise.

The second half became a scrappy affair with few clear-cut chances before the Bucks grabbed the equaliser on 81 minutes as substitute Luke Shiels poked the ball home from close range after a corner kick. Lewis saved well from Connor Kirby before the game entered added time.
Bates’ driving run from his own half brought a foul but the referee allowed play to continue as Bates chipped the ball to an advancing Newton who provided the finish to put Saints ahead. There was still time for Jordon Crawford’s goal-bound shot that was denied by an excellent save from Dearnley.

The game had nine yellow cards but not one bad challenge as the new referee’s directive kicked in.
“We thoroughly deserved the win today,” Cowan said. “It will be difficult for Buxton to take but over the course of the game we were well worthy of the three points. They are a good team and they decided to change formation and match us up so it became of battle of wills in the second half. The attitude and endeavour from the players was incredible. Danny was exceptional but all the players can take credit today from their attitude, application and work rate. They all deserve high praise.”
