Roger Johnson’s side cruised to a comfortable win over a struggling Gloucester City side to put behind them a frustrating series of postponed games.
“It has been tough because we live for match-days and they have been few and far between but you can’t help the weather,” Johnson said. “We said we had been creating chances but not taking them but we found ourselves three goals up at half-time and the job was done really.”
The home side started well going close before Jimmy Armson opened the scoring in just the fifth minute with a tap in after Callum Stead’s cross was deflected leaving the Brackley midfielder with an open goal.
Two goals in three minutes either side of the half hour mark finished the game as a contest to all intents and purposes. First Adam Rooney finished clinically past Brandon Hall from Armson’s pass and then Cosmas Matwasa smashed a loose ball past a helpless Hall after fine work by substitute Sam Smart who drove into the penalty area only to see his blocked shot fall neatly for Matwasa.
Some terrific play before the break could have extended the lead as Stead was unable to finish from Smart’s cross and then Riccardo Calder fired over after Stead had reached the by-line.
Gloucester spurned a first chance in the game on 53 minutes when Tope Odebayi shot too high when in a good position. Then Dara Dada brought a good save from Danny Lewis in The Tiger’s only real shot on target.
Saints failed to capitalise on further chances before Levi Amantchi finished clinically put through by Smart on 87 minute.
“Today was vital in respect of getting the win but we have so many games coming up now,” Johnson added. “February is a big month for us.”
