A warm welcome to Gavin Cowan's first signing at St James Park.

Brackley Town Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of striker Danny Newton. The experienced forward joins the Saints after recently leaving National League side Boreham Wood.

Known for his relentlessness and hard work on the pitch, Danny, 32, has bags of experience in non-league football, including a brief spell at St James Park in 2013. He also has EFL experience with a four-year spell in League Two with Stevenage where he scored 29 goals in 130 appearances.

Brackley Town Manager Gavin Cowan had this to say about his first signing “I’m extremely excited to have Danny on board, he’s a proven striker who has excelled at this level and above. I’ve worked with him before and know his steely mentality matches his ability on the pitch.”

Born in Liverpool, Newton began his career in the Leicester City Academy as his family moved to the area, he later joined then Conference North side Hinckley United, and his second season saw him enjoy a first-team breakthrough with 28 appearances that allowed him to form the third best attack in the division despite the Knitters finishing 15th. An even better season followed in 2011/12, with Newton creating a deadly partnership with future Premier League striker Andre Gray, with the duo notching a combined 29 goals.

He opted to move on at the end of the season in order to progress his career after Hinckley finished the campaign in the relegation zone, but a brief spell at Nuneaton Town proved to be short-lived and ended with a return to Hinckley on loan, as well as a loan spell at Barwell.

He joined Barwell on a permanent basis at the start of the 2013–14 season, before making the step back up to join Brackley Town in October 2013. In January 2014, he signed for Leamington, where he was the club's top goalscorer during the 2014–15 season.

A move to Tamworth, also of the National League North, followed in May 2015. After two seasons and a further 39 goals in 79 appearances and five end-of-season awards including a second successive Player of the Year, seeing him invited to participate in Jamie Vardy’s V9 academy in 2017, which attracted the attention of a number of EFL clubs before an eventual move to Stevenage.

He finished top scorer in his first season with 16, which saw him win Player of the Season at Broadhall Way. However, his remaining three seasons at the LAMEX Stadium were less productive due to niggling injuries.

He joined Solihull Moors in August 2021 and played 38 times for the Moors helping them reach the play-off final, before signing for Boreham Wood last Summer, he made his debut for Boreham Wood in the club's first match of the season, scoring the only goal of the game in a 1–0 away victory at Southend United.

Subject to FA and National League approval.

Welcome to St James Park Danny!
