Our FA Cup journey begins with a 2nd round qualifying tie at Truro City. Surely the longest trip of any tie in the round which puts a large question mark over how the competition is “regionalised” at this stage.
However, it is a rare opportunity for a footballing trip to Cornwall and to play Truro City once again. The sides last met in Saints’ Southern League days. The teams played out some memorable matches including Saints’ 4-3 win in February 2010 in front of 165 spectators on a Tuesday evening with Owen Story and Tommy Winters both bagging a brace. In April the sides played out a scoring draw in the reverse fixture. The 2010-11 season saw Truro top the table and gain promotion with Brackley finishing 9th before becoming champions ourselves the following year. In that final season Saints won 3-2 at St James Park in another memorable encounter, the legendary Barry Hayles on the score-sheet for the visitors.
Both teams have moved on since those days, Brackley now in our 13th season at Step 2 and Truro playing in National League South and moved into their new stadium at the Truro Sports Hub west of Truro, the opening game against Dorking Wanderers in August 2024 now remembered for the notorious kit clash that led Wanderers to play with shirts turned inside out.
Truro currently sit eighth in the NLS table with thirteen points from eight games. Having lost against Dorking on the opening day of the season they were unbeaten in the next five games with four wins before losing their last two games, both by a single goal against Bath City and Eastbourne Borough.
Gavin Cowan’s side won well away at Peterborough Sports on Saturday and have ten points from the opening eight games.
