Despite a squad severely reduced by injury and illness Gavin Cowan’s team has strung together a winning run of five games including National League North wins at Peterborough Sports and at home against Marine. Jez Abbey and Will Joyner have joined the squad with both appearing in the midweek Senior Cup win and Abbey making his FA Cup debut against Ramsgate.
Southport are currently 18th in the league with three wins from nine games having conceded more goals than any team aside from Oxford City and yet to record a clean sheet. On Saturday the Sandgrounders tumbled out of the FA Cup at home against Curzon Ashton.
Bar last season’s encounter won by Southport 3-1, recent games between the two sides have produced few goals with Southport failing to find the net on four of the last five occasions and twice finishing goal-less. Last season the sides met at Haig Avenue in February with Brackley going into the game in third place in the league table and hard on the heels of Tamworth and Scunthorpe. Danny Newton gave Saints an early lead and Southport saw Marcus Carver red carded on the hour before an inexplicable late collapse saw ‘Port level on 85 minutes and net twice more to take the points.
