The National League North season takes a break with FA Cup second qualifying round action next up for Gavin Cowan’s Brackley side. The tie of the round takes Saints to Glanford Park, home of Scunthorpe United.
Scunthorpe have started their league campaign strongly and will host Saints in the league in October in an already eagerly awaited match. Before then the sides meet in the FA Cup, a first ever meeting.
The Iron were in the Championship in 2010-11 and as recently as five years ago in EFL 1 so the club has endured challenging times and find themselves rubbing shoulders with a new group of teams. Their most recent game at home against Buxton was brought to a bizarre conclusion, abandoned in stoppage time due to torrential rain with the home side trailing. On the same day Saints were at Scarborough Athletic suffering a first defeat of the season to end the final unbeaten record in the division.
Brackley have twice reached the second round of this competition, most recently in 2020-21 with the trip to Tranmere Rovers. Scunthorpe reached the fifth round in the late ‘60s and in 2015-16 went out to Chelsea in the third round.
The record attendance at Glanford Park is 9,077 v Manchester United 22 September 2010. This won’t be broken by Brackley’s visit on Saturday but it will be a big occasion for supporters and another tough test for Gavin Cowan’s side.
