The fixture computer sends Saints on an opening day away trip to Chorley for the second time in three seasons. Last season saw a dour goal-less affair and in August 2021 only a late winner from Twariq Yusuf could separate the sides in an equally tough and even contest.
Four players remain from the sixteen-man squad at that narrow opening day victory as Gavin Cowan opens his account as Brackley Town manager.
Cowan declared himself pleased with his team’s pre-season preparations albeit with several players picking up injuries. Last Saturday’s win over newly promoted Oxford City provided another boost, a strong Hoops side overcome through Alex Gudger’s second-half goal and a strong all-round performance.
Gaz Dean finished last season as interim manager taking the team all the way to the play-off final after a fine semi-final win at Chester. Dean is recovered from injury and is back as captain.
Chorley finished last season 12th in a congested National League North table, just three points off a play-off place, and will have their eye on going one better this time around and reaching the end of season play-offs. The Chorley squad has seen one or two additions from last season and is full of experienced players under manager Andy Preece. Former manager Jamie Vermiglio has returned to the club, where he was also a player, as the new chairman.
