Saturday’s opening game brought a frustrating defeat for Gavin Cowan’s side at the hands of Scunthorpe United. Meanwhile Chester also lost, suffering a 3-0 defeat at Spennymoor Town.
The two sides met twice last season with Saints winning at St James Park late in the season, Connor Hall (two) and Danny Newton on the score-sheet. Chester won the midweek game pre-Christmas through a penalty just before half-time. In the 2022-23 season the home side won in scorching August heat at the Deva Stadium, the sides drew in the New Year re-match at SJP while Saints won the play-off semi-final in May to progress to the Promotion Final through George Carline’s second half strike.
Saturday’s game at the Leap76 Stadium is Chester’s opening home game of the new season against and is their Book of Remembrance Fixture, where Chester FC celebrates the lives of all those sadly lost over the past 12 months. Prior to kick off on the weekend, there will be a period of reflection where the names of those who have passed away will be read out by announcer Rob Clegg, before a period of applause will take place.
If you cannot get to the game to support Gavin Cowan’s team, you can follow the action on the club Twitter (X) feed or through live match commentary by BBC Oxford with Tim Carroll and Kieren Bushnell on BBC Sport website and on-line via the app. BBC Northampton will carry live updates pre-match, at half-time and full-time.
