MATCH PREVIEW
Monday Night will be the 5th time the Saints have reached the second round of the FA Cup. With potential for a record-breaking attendance, Gavin Cowan’s men have a mammoth task to overcome under the lights.
Despite playing the Brewers twice in pre-season, it will be the first ever professional encounter between Brackley and Burton.
Burton have become rejuvenated since their struggles at the beginning of the season, having moved out of the relegation zone after away wins at Bradford and AFC Wimbledon. Although flashing a fine away form, Gary Bowyer’s men would recently lose 4-0 at home to Leyton Orient.
In the FA Cup so far:
Burton brushed aside St Albans in the first round of the FA Cup, thrashing them 6-0 at home. Braces by Charlie Webster, Tyrese Shade and Fabio Tavares secured a second-round visit to St James Park.
Brackley have played 3 times in the cup so far, scoring 9 goals in the process. In round 1, Callum Stewart would step up in the 96th minute to bury a penalty into the bottom right corner, pulling The Saints from the depths of elimination. Then following 120 minutes of football, Jonny Maxted's heroics in the penalty shootout made it a night to remember at St James Park.
Key Players:
Central Midfielder Charlie Webster has had a season to remember for the Brewers. With 7 goal involvements in 16 starts, the former Chelsea man is the heartbeat of Gary Bowyer’s side.
Leading the line is Jake Beesley, joining from Blackpool in the summer. The 28-year-old has played a key part in Burtons journey from the bottom of the table.
Furthermore, between the sticks is 19-year-old Kamil Dudek, somehow not related to the Liverpool great. The Pole kept a clean sheet in the first round and is set to start at St James Park.
The Man in Charge:
It’s Gary Bowyer’s second season in charge at the Pirelli Stadium, taking charge in December 2024 when Burton were 9pts from safety. He would keep the Staffordshire side up in what was described as a “miracle” by national newspapers.
After a full pre-season and a summer of recruitment, Bowyer has had a spectrum of challenges to deal with, including replacing star players Rumarn Burrell and Max Crocombe who were poached by Championship clubs during the transfer window.
Previous to his tenure at Burton, Bowyer’s greatest feat was at Blackpool, guiding the tangerines back to League One in 2017. Bowyer had an excellent record at Salford, with a 42.85%-win rate, but would be dismissed when narrowly missing the playoffs in 2022. He would then make the journey north of the border, promoting Dundee FC at his first attempt.
