NEXT MATCH PREVIEW: BRACKLEY TOWN V BANBURY UNITED - MONDAY 26TH DECEMBER - 12PM KO

Chris Tymon24 Dec 2022 - 17:09

Saints welcome our near neighbours Banbury United to St James Park on Boxing Day, 12pm KO.

After a break of three weeks following the icy weather Saints return to action on Boxing Day with the much-anticipated visit to St James Park of Banbury United.

Given the geographical proximity of the two clubs it is surprising how few times the sides have met. The teams were both in the same division of league football for five Southern League Premier Division seasons from 2007-8. Jon Brady’s side were promoted as champions in 2012 and a decade later The Puritans have joined Saints in National League North.

The clubs have met once in the FA Vase in the 1995-6 season, once in the FA Trophy and similarly once in the FA Cup, ironically both in season 2005-6 and with both ties requiring replays to separate the teams.

So Monday’s all-ticket game (kick-off midday) is a rare occasion and comes back-to-back with the return fixture at Banbury on New Year’s Day. Ticketing arrangements for this segregated game can be found here.

Banbury had fixtures postponed also due to the wintry weather but returned to action with a win over Bognor Regis Town in the Trophy on Tuesday evening and come to SJP in good form, in the play-off places and with four wins in the last five league games and all four with clean sheets.

Roger Johnson’s side is unbeaten in twelve National League games but has drawn three of the last five, away games at Leamington, Blyth Spartans and Southport, so will be eager to get back to winning ways. All looks set for an intriguing encounter.
