Brackley Town 1-2 Altrincham 1/12/18
Rare defeat for Saints
In-form Altrincham continued their march up the table with a deserved victory at St James Park as Saints fell to a first home defeat in the league since early August. An even and tightly contested first half gave way to a controlled second half performance by the visitors to earn three points that lifts the Robins into 4th place and keeps Saints in 8th.
“On the day the mistakes we made ended up costing us the game,” Kevin Wilkin said. “They passed the ball well but for me the two goals we conceded were gifts and in a big match those mistakes have cost us. Once they were ahead they managed the second half well but we had too many players who weren’t where they needed to be today. Overall it was the flattest performance of the season so far. The first half was quite even and we had some decent moments but it can be all important to get your noses in front and then to control the game. It is a really intense league and today is something we have got to learn from.”
Jordan Hulme saw his chance snuffed out midway through the half when well placed while for the home side Connor Franklin’s fierce effort deflected off James Jones bringing a fine save from Thompson in a first period of otherwise few goal chances until the latter stages.
Simon Richman capitalised on a defensive mix-up to give Altrincham a 39th minute lead. But Brackley found an instant reply as Glenn Walker headed low past Tony Thompson from Adam Walker’s cross to send the sides into the break on level terms.
The Robins were again ahead after 52 minutes when full-back Andy White tucked his shot inside Danny Lewis’ post from distance.
This time there was to be no come-back from the Saints however as Altrincham managed the game well restricting Brackley’s possession and sights on goal.
Hulme had only Lewis to beat late on to double his side’s lead but the Brackley keeper saved well at close quarters. Despite some late pressure Brackley could not carve out the equalising opportunity as the visitors recorded a sixth win in seven games.
