Boston United 1-0 Brackley Town 21 Jan 2020
Smash and Grab
Boston grabbed a late winner to steal the points in classic smash and grab style on a night dominated by the visitors who did everything but score. Man of the Match was Pilgrims’ keeper Peter Crook who pulled off a string of saves to thwart Saints before Dominic Knowles struck in the 86th minute to send Kevin Wilkin’s side away from Lincolnshire empty handed.
Boston started brightly, Jordan Thewlis bringing a close range save from Danny Lewis, the only action for the Brackley keeper until the dying minutes of the game, but Saints took control bringing three fine first half saves from Crook and three times seeing defenders clear off the line as Gaz Dean, Lee Ndlovu and Jimmy Armson all went close.
The second half was all Brackley but Ndlovu was twice denied and Armson’s header from Ellis Myles’ cross was wide as the home defence held out. Boston clawed their way into the game in the closing minutes and found the crucial moment as Whittle found Knowles who tucked his finish past Lewis from 10 yards.
Even Boston heads were shaking at the final whistle as their side held out to claim an unlikely win and end Saints’ 11 game unbeaten run.
