Blyth hit for six

A first away league fixture in six weeks brought a handsome win for Kevin Wilkin’s side by a margin of six goals.  The score-line did not flatter Saints who created chances aplenty to have won by more.

“It was an excellent performance today and a great response to the disappointment of losing in the Trophy last Saturday,” Wilkin said.  “Our finishing was excellent.  We knew that re-starts could be important for us and they were and gave us that platform to go on to better things.”

Captain Gaz Dean opened the scoring rising highest to head in from Shane Byrne’s 9th minute corner as Saints capitalised on a really bright start to the game.  Glenn Walker was close from a free-kick before Lee Ndlovu doubled the lead, the striker finishing from close range as Blyth failed to clear from another Byrne corner.

Ndlovu, Shep Murombedzi and Walker were all thwarted before Dean’s sliding intervention denied the home side a rare chance on goal at the other end.  Minutes before the break Ndlovu finished neatly after Spartans conceded possession on the edge of the penalty area, Ellis Myles setting up Walker whose shot was charged down but the ball fell to Ndlovu who made no mistake to send the visitors into the interval with a commanding advantage.

In the second half Wes York produced a terrific finish from a tight angle from Myles’ fine pass with just 55 minutes played and Ndlovu completed his hat-trick ten minutes later, played in through the middle by Byrne he beat the keeper one on one.  With the pitch heavy and a Tuesday evening game to come, Wilkin made full use of his bench, Ndlovu giving way to Daire after 68 minutes and producing a lovely moment as Wilkin embraced his hat-trick scoring centre forward on the touch-line.   There was time for Brackley to pass up further scoring opportunities before York got the sixth goal stooping to head in from substitute Tendai Daire’s cross.

“I am delighted for Lee of course,” Wilkin said.  “He is a big player for us.  Lee can come in for criticism for not scoring all the goals he could and that his play merits and he is the first to hold his hand up to that.  But he shows great honesty.  He got in the right areas today and I am absolutely delighted he got his goals.”
