Brackley Town FC v Billing.
20th September 2020
A hard fought match against a very good team from Billing. Although the scoreline (1-4) went against us this time, Graham and I were really pleased with how our team played and pulled together.
Given that it was the first time we've played as a combined team, it was 60 minute competitive match (a first for a lot of the team) and we made lots of changes throughout the game, all in all a pleasing start, to which the scoreline doesn't do us justice. To quote the opposing team's manager he was "really worried at half time" :-)
I thought the whole team played with spirit and Brackley courage, supporting each other against a side that had a few more lucky bounces today than us. I feel confident on another day, given a bit more development and match fitness a team we can comfortably match and outplay.
We certainly outplayed through a lot of the match with some lovely combinations between some of our youngsters, Edwin and Lucas showing a lot of superb interplay in the first half, and a cracking goal from Lucas, starting as he left off from last season.
I was really impressed with Nathan, Alex and Finlay playing very well together as a back three in the first half and covering each other, putting into practice what we'd been working on in training. Arlo pulled out some vital saves and Spencer put in a great performance and who's confidence grew throughout the match, his first competitive 9v9 game. And when Kian came on it was hard to believe he only got back to training last week, back to his defensive and probing best straight away.
Our packed midfield stood up to the job some great positional play and runs from Issy, superb tackling from Harry P, Harry B making some darting runs and showing some very confident play and quick feet, Lewen on the wing seems a position he will excel in, Henry B putting in some important tackles and thoughtful positioning to delay their attackers. Oscar put in an excellent tireless show and was unlucky to not break through from a well directed Reuben through ball or end the end of a couple of corners too. Henry P had a superb game with a slew of vital tackles, endless running and some great link up play with the forwards.
Upfront Reuben held his own against some very hard defending. I thought our attacking play in particular and going forward as a team today shone through and is a bright sign of things to come this season.
Plenty of good takeaways throughout and some areas for us all to work and develop on in our next training session on Wednesday.
